Early life
He originates from the same land as Divine, they were even born around the same time, though compared to her, he was from a lower social class. His childhood wasn't the most eventful, though he did lose his mother when he was a teenager. He wasn't always a quiet broody type, I like to think he was quite social back then, it's how he discovered he swung both ways when it comes to what bugs he liked. But he had a crush on a female bug, and wanted to start a life with her. She brought him a lot of joy, and eventually he confessed and they became a couple. Unfortunately, the war broke out, the same that destroyed Divine's home, and that ruined their plans. He was drafted as a soldier, on the side allied to Divine's family. Unfortunately, he wasn't there to protect their home, as he was fighting in another region at the time. The war ended 10 years later, and while he sustained some injuries (perhaps that's why he doesn't like to take off his mask?), he was able to return to his love and start the life he wanted.
The war left him less enthusiastic about life than before. He saw things that changed him forever, and he became a rather anxious individual. The two married and had children together - two daughters, whom he loved more than anything in the world. But unfortunately, it was not to last. He made enemies in the war, and some of them survived and tracked him down. They attacked his home while he was busy in the beast stables outside, and by the time he realized and picked up his weapon, he had already lost those most important to him. In blind rage, he killed the attackers, and he broke down into tears afterwards. He sat there be the bodies of his family for hours before he got the strength to bury them. He was too devastated to plan revenge at the time, and so he simply wandered off into the wilderness, as if he hoped a beast would end his life.

The guilt of not being there to protect his loved ones was overwhelming, but whenever he tried to end his suffering, he gave up last second every time. It made him feel worthless, and whenever he stopped by a town or city, he barely talked to anyone. Then one day, he encountered the wandering theatre that was performing in that town. He had no interest in attending their show, but something has drawn him inside. The show had already ended, so he walked out, trying not to be a bother. But as he walked away, he was interrupted by two bugs who unfortunately recognized him, and as he quickly found out, they were there to finish the job. He knew he didn't have a chance, he was weak and had no will to live, so part of him hoped they could just kill him.
But someone intervened, and that someone was Grimm. It was swift, the attackers were dead before Brumm even realized what was happening. He turned to the mysterious bug, who took a long look at him and reached his hand towards him, offering him a place inside his Troupe. Brumm was confused, and in that confusion, he accepted the offer, perhaps from the immediate gratitude he felt for the unexpected help, even if it interrupted his plan to die. His mind was all over the place, and he didn't understand the reasoning behind that offer. His first instinct was to simply leave, but once again, he was drawn to the Troupe Master, there was something about him that seemed out of this world.
Grimm later explained to Brumm that he saw him when he first entered the Troupe tent, and he was immediately fascinated with him. He told Brumm that he could sense the aura of loss, but also mystery that has drawn him in. Brumm was as baffled as before, and was going to suggest that Grimm was wasting his time, but then the Troupe Master asked him if he had any interest in music. Brumm wanted to say no, but he remembered the days he would play music to his love and then their kids, and he broke down crying. It wasn't the first time Grimm encountered grief, and in his response, he said something that Brumm still remembers to this day. That those he lost, those he cherished so much, could live on as the music he played. Brumm couldn't say no after that, where else could he get a chance like this?

He became a member of the Troupe's music crew, and it became clear that he had a massive talent, which Grimm soon took notice of. He was promoted to the leader of the crew not long after, and the new responsibility had a noticeable effect on Brumm. He was still rather quiet, but he visibly enjoyed his job and even shared an occasional laugh with his crew. He also met Divine, and a wave of guilt hit him when he learned her story. He apologized to her for not being able to protect her home, but she made it clear to him that she doesn't blame him. They became friends, as they had quite a lot in common, being from the same land.
Brumm's fascination with Grimm, and the gratitude he felt towards him, eventually morphed into a complicated feeling that Brumm thought was love. He confessed to Grimm, but was rejected, which he felt was like a bucket of cold water. He realized he was still suffering from the grief of losing his family, which confused him. It was as if the feeling for Grimm was a way for him to fill a void, and wasn't a genuine affection. He was even more confident in that when he learned that Grimm found a partner, a writer named Irma, and he realized he wasn't jealous of Grimm, he was jealous of the love between the two, as it reminded him of what he lost.
He still owed Grimm this new life, which he was extremely grateful for, and he was able to return his favor when he saved Irma from an unfortunate accident. Grimm was thankful, and as a token of gratitude, he offered Brumm a position as his right hand bug, as he proved how trustworthy he is. Brumm, seeing it as an opportunity to further repay his debt towards the Troupe Master, accepted the offer, though over time it became less about the debt and more about the desire to see the Troupe prosper. It was his new home, it helped him find a new happiness in life, and he wanted it to be the best it could be. With his advice, it was able to reach even greater heights than before, as Brumm proved to have a strategic mind that, together with Grimm's charisma and appeal, made their performances even more successful than they've ever been.
Present day
He still dealt with his grief, as he was unable to fully process it even after so many years. However, a big breakthrough happened when he saved Vyrm from a rogue Grimmkin. He didn't show it at the time, as he was surprisingly level-headed about it, but the knowledge that he was able to save someone from a killer was the final step he needed to overcome his pain. He wasn't there to protect his family, but he was able to save Vyrm, and with the death of Vyrm's attempted killer at the hands of Grimm, Brumm was able to finally bury his pain and move on.
Some years passed, and Brumm became noticeably happier on the outside. He never regained his social skills, he was still the strange introvert who didn't say much, but he didn't have the same sadness following him everywhere he went. He even got his eyes on a bug who started visiting the town of Dirtmouth, the nailmaster named Mato. Now that Brumm was able to leave his past behind, he realized that his wife wouldn't have wanted him to be alone for the rest of his life. And he couldn't deny that Mato caught his attention, so since then, Brumm has been trying to awkwardly approach him, to mixed results - it's obvious that he's a bit rusty in this aspect.
